Rogues drop league opener, 7-4
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Walla Walla scored in each of the first four innings and defeated the Medford Rogues, 7-4, in the West Coast League baseball opener for both teams.
The game kicked off a three-game series.
Medford, trailing 6-1 entering the eighth inning, scored three times to pull close, but the Sweets fended off the challenge.
Only three batters in the Rogues’ lineup managed hits, including two each by Tony Roque and Stefan Panayiotou.
Walla Walla, which got three hits, including a home run and a double, from Chris McCready, scored twice each in the first and second innings and once each in the third and fourth innings.
Medford tallied a single run in the sixth, when Roque singled and Panayiotou doubled him in .
Those two were at it again in the eighth when, with one out, Roque walked and Panayiotou singled. Pinch-hitter Jackson Overlund was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
After a strikeout for the second out, Roque scored on a Brock Pradere fielder’s choice. Panayiotou and Overlund scored soon after on an error by the shortstop.
The inning ended when Derron Davis, who had walked, was caught stealing.
Roque was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Panayiotou was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitcher Jackson Bertsch took the loss. He allowed eight hits and five runs, all earned, in two innings.
Kade Wagner relieved and pitched three-hit ball over six innings, giving up two runs, both earned.
