Man dies during fight with his brother
MERLIN — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who collapsed during a fight with his brother Monday afternoon.
Josephine County sheriff's deputies headed to a home in the 900 block of Saratoga Way at about 2:40 p.m. after they received word that people were giving CPR to an unconscious man there, according to Oregon State Police, the agency spearheading the investigation.
The man, 53-year-old Steve Messer, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators learned he had been fighting with his brother when he fell to the ground, police said. The brother, 54-year-old Donald Messer, was taken to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment. Both brothers had visible injuries from the scuffle.
The cause of Steve Messer's death is not yet clear, and an autopsy will help determine whether he suffered a medical problem during the fight, OSP Lt. Bill Fugate said.
