Coggins, Weaver lead Mustangs in opener
CORVALLIS — The Cascade Christian connection served the Medford Mustangs well in their opening American Legion baseball game of the season Thursday.
Cody Coggins and Will Weaver, who helped Cascade Christian to the Class 3A state semifinals this spring, combined on a four-hitter as the Mustangs downed the Corvallis Marketmen, 8-0, Thursday.
Winning pitcher Coggins started and went the first five innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. He walked two.
Weaver was even more impressive, retiring the first 11 hitters he faced. After giving up an infield single, he struck out the final batter. He had four strikeouts and no walks in four one-hit innings to earn the save.
Medford rapped 13 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance by Micah Brown. He drove in three runs, including two on a triple in the third inning. Tate Cowden, who had doubled, and Jared Evans, who had a drag-bunt single, both came in.
Cowden was 3-for-5 with two runs, and Evans was 2-for-5 with three runs.
