Olson's stellar pitching lifts Rogues, 4-2
Billy Olson pitched a no-hit, shutout ball through seven innings as the Medford Rogues snapped a three-game losing streak in West Coast League baseball with a 4-2 victory over Corvallis Monday at Harry & David Field.
Olson, who improved to 2-1, allowed three walks and struck out five before being spelled by Justin Mulvaney, who pitched a hitless eighth.
The potential combined no-hitter for the Rogues (12-13), however, was derailed with one out in the top of the ninth, when Cole Kreuter hit an RBI single off Rogues reliever DJ Wilson.
The Knights (10-15) trimmed the Rogues’ lead to 4-2 before Wilson forced a pop fly to center field for the final out.
The Rogues’ leading hitter, Dan Mayer, blasted his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning. He also drove in Derron Davis with a double in the seventh to put the Rogues up 4-0.
The Rogues take on the Knights for Game 2 of the three-game series tonight at 6:35 at Harry & David Field.
