Mustang bats come alive in Area 4 split
SPRINGFIELD — Stymied in Game 1 of an American Legion AAA Area 4 doubleheader against Willamette, Medford responded with a big second game and salvaged a split Friday at John Young Field.
Willamette’s Brad O’Conner held the Mustangs (25-9, 8-2 Area 4) to three hits in a 4-3 opening win. Medford had 14 hits in taking the nightcap, 11-2.
Willamette is 1-5 in league.
In the second game, Bryce Rogan was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Austin Zavala was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Medford.
With two outs in the first inning, the Mustangs strung five singles in a row, including a two-run hit by Eric Carlson.
Micah Brown and Tate Cowden were each 2-for-4 with two runs, and Jared Evans was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Jordan Ragan pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks for Medford.
In Game 1, the Mustangs struck out a season-high 12 times against O’Conner, who pitched for Lane Community College last spring.
Carlson had a two-run single as Medford tied it in the third, 3-3. Willamette scored the winner in the fifth.

BEND 5, MEDFORD 3: At Bend, Bend scored three runs in the third inning to wipe out an early deficit and defeated Medford in West Coast League play.
Medford scored in the first, third and fourth innings, tying it at 3-3 in the latter.
Tony Roque reached on a leadoff single and came around to score.
Roque and Stefan Panayiotou were 2-for-4 for the Rogues (12-16). Panayiotou raised his batting average to .304, and Roque is at .294.
Max Bethell took the loss for Medford, going four innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked three.
Bend is 26-5.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST AMATEUR: At Sunriver, Medford’s Dylan Wu scored a pair of victories during the second day of match play to advance into today’s quarterfinal round at Sunriver Resort’s Woodlands course.
Wu erased a 2-up advantage by Rogue River’s Kevin Murphy in the Round of 32 by winning hole Nos. 12 and 13, then pulled ahead to secure the victory by winning the final two holes for a 2-up tally.
In the Round of 16, Wu kept up his hot pace by winning four straight holes among his first nine against Pete Griffith of Westlake Village, Calif. Wu was 5 up at the turn, then closed out the 8-and-6 victory by winning hole Nos. 10-12.
Wu will next face Grady Meyer of West Fargo, N.D., at 8 a.m. in today’s quarterfinals on the Meadows course. The semifinals follow this afternoon.
