Hostert pitches Rogues past front-running Bend

BEND — Kohl Hostert kept West Coast League-leading Bend in check through eight innings and the Medford Rogues secured their first win in five tries against the Elks, 4-1, at Vince Genna Stadium.

Hostert scattered six hits with one walk and two strikeouts through eight innings for Medford (13-16), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Bend (26-6) tallied an unearned run against Hostert in the eighth when Cadyn Grenier reached on an error and scored on a double by West Tunnell.

Rogues reliever D.J. Wilson struck out two batters in the ninth and, after another error, finished the job with his third strikeout to preserve the victory.

The WCL South teams wrap up their series at 1:05 p.m. today before Medford opens a three-game homestand Monday against the Victoria HarbourCats.

Medford jumped ahead with a third-inning solo home run by J.J. Kitaoka, then built a 2-0 advantage in the fifth when T.K. McWhertor hit a leadoff double, was sacrificed to third by Kitaoka and scored on a groundout by Derron Davis.

In the top of the eighth, the Rogues scored twice for a 4-0 lead when Dan Mayer singled and moved to third on an error after a grounder by Stefan Panayiotou. Mayer scored on a groundout by Tony Roque, and Panayiotou followed on a passed ball.
