Dispose of unwanted drugs Saturday at Take-Back event

People with unneeded or expired prescription drugs can bring them to one of three sites Saturday, Sept. 26, for safe and anonymous disposal as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's 10th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Drugs will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Medford Police Department, 411 W. Eighth St., Medford; Talent Police Department, 604 Talent Ave., Talent; and Eagle Point Police Department, 17 Buchanan Ave. S., Eagle Point.

There will be 45 collection sites in Oregon. Take-Back events in the state since 2010 have resulted in 69,359 pounds of drugs removed from circulation. The service is free and anonymous.

Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medications, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, posing safety and environmental hazards.

Nationwide, the DEA's Take-Back events collected more than 2,411 tons of drugs, according to a news release.
