Snow levels expected to hit 2,000 feet early Sunday

The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a winter weather advisory from 10 p.m. today until 4 p.m. Sunday for areas above 2,000 feet elevation because of potentially heavy snow in the forecast.

Snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are expected in the foothills around the Rogue Valley, with heavier snow expected before sunrise Sunday and into the morning hours.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. The Weather Service said drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility.

In addition, strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected for portions of southwestern Oregon and Northern California. Forecasters expect heavy rainfall near the coast and in the Coastal Range, bringing a possibility for small stream and urban flooding for those areas. Strong winds could down trees or powerlines as well as make driving difficult for high-profile vehicle, the Weather Service said.

To check road conditions before venturing out, call 511 for Oregon roads. For California road conditions, call 800-427-ROAD (7623).
