Honsinger ninth in U-23 cyclo-cross nationals
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Clara Honsinger, of Ashland, placed ninth in the USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross Nationals Sunday.
Honsinger, a freshman at the University of Portland, competed in the women's under-23 race and had a time of 48 minutes, 36 seconds.
Ellen Noble, of Kennebunkport, Maine, dominated the event in 44:09, more than 1½ minutes ahead of second-place Sofia Gomez Villafane, of Durango, Colo.
Honsinger on Friday won the NCAA Division II women's cyclo-cross title.
SILVER GLOVES: Five fighters from Medford's Spartan Boxing Gym advanced to the national Silver Gloves tournament in a regional event Saturday in Boise, Idaho.
Nationals are Feb. 4-6 in Independence, Mo.
Bout winners to advance were Cole Burkhart, 12, who defeated Dorian Medina, of Wyoming; Uriel Ibarra, 10, who topped Xavier Buckman, of Montana; and Malaya Wohosky, 10, who won by technical knockout over Alilliana Lamere, of Montana.
Spartan fighters Julianna Stores, 10, and Jeremiah Millender, 15, advanced as walkovers when no others entered their divisions.
BUTTE FALLS/PROSPECT FOURTH: At Oakridge, Luke McGonagle placed second to lead the Butte Falls/Prospect wrestling team to fourth place in the Tim Fine Tournament Saturday.
McGonagle, competing at 195 pounds, helped the team to 69 points, behind La Pine (247), Central Linn (178) and Oakridge (150). There were 11 teams.
Also for Butte Falls/Prospect, Christian Suarez (152 pounds) was third, Spencer Scofield (170) fourth and Alex Neville (120) and Mycala Patereau (132) fifth.
