OSF Play Preface: An introduction to the themes, character and plot of the play "Richard II" is at noon Thursday, July 28, in Carpenter Hall on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival campus, 15 S. Golden Spike Dedication: A plaque commemorating the historic occasion when a symbolic railroad spike was set in place will be celebrated at noon Thursday, July 28, at Railroad Park, 748 A St., Ashland. The celebration is open to the public and light refreshments will be served. On December 17, 1887, the opening of Central Pacific’s North-South Railroad Line, now known as the Siskiyou Route, was made possible when a “golden spike” was set in place by railroad founder Charles Crocker, thereby connecting Oregon and California rail lines and completing the freight and passenger train service for the entire nation. The historic plaque ceremony on July 28 will be held at the exact location of the 1887 event. Call 541-488-5340 for more information.

Summer Gardening: Learn about tending fruits, vegetables and flowers at 4 p.m. every Thursday, at Ashland Creek Park, 27 E. Ashland City Band: The community band, directed by Don Bieghler, will present its annual concert of Norwegian music at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 28, in the Butler Band Shell in Ashland's Lithia Park. The program will include Norway's national anthem, a march titled “Valdres,” Norwegian folk songs and “Alphorn Polka” played on authentic Alphorn instruments. Green Show: The Oregon Shakespeare Festival hosts free Green Show performances at 6:45 p.m. six nights each week except Mondays through Oct. 16 on its outdoor Courtyard Stage at its Ashland campus, 15 S. The Hamazons: Improvisational comedy smolders in the Southern Gothic world of American playwright and author Tennessee Williams when The Hamazons — Cil Stengel, Eve Smyth and Kyndra Laughery — present "Long Hot Summer" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 29-30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at the Bellview Grange, 1050 Tolman Creek Road, Ashland. Inspired by such plays as "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "The Glass Menagerie," The Hamazons will deliver a full-length improvised story in two acts with an outcome that will depend on audience suggestions. Watch them take on sordid pasts, raw emotions and dysfunctional family dynamics. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased online at hamazons.com. Tickets will be $18 at the door.

Bicycle Ride: The Velo Slo-Mos meet for Saturday morning bike rides throughout the year. Call 541-857-6819 for meeting times and locations. The rides are for bicyclists who want to ride slowly on mostly flat terrain, see the sights, make friends, learn the skills and etiquette of riding in a group and stop for a coffee and social time. Rides are often on the Bear Creek Greenway and cover 15-20 miles. Helmets are required. Bring a spare tire tube, water and money for the coffee stop.
