Armed woman drives through emergency room doors
An 85-year-old woman drove through the open emergency room doors at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, nearly hitting a nurse, shortly before noon Sunday.
The woman was screaming that someone was trying to kill her. She later told police bikers were after her and that she was "driving crazy to get to a safe place," according to Grants Pass police, who took a gun away from her.
Just prior to the incident, dispatchers took a call of reckless driving on Redwood Highway, including someone passing on the shoulder.
The driver went into the ambulance bay at the hospital and tried to drive inside the building. She then backed out of the emergency room doors and parked at the front entrance — driving through the grass on the north side of the building and crashing into a sign pole in the process.
She told the officer she had a handgun under her leg and reached for it, but was stopped. Her son, who also owns the car, was contacted and was given the weapon for safekeeping.
The woman, whose full name was not listed in the log, will be required to re-test with Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.
