Grants Pass man killed in I-5 crash
The Oregon State Police has released the names of three drivers involved in a fatal traffic accident Friday on Interstate 5 near Hugo.
Robert W. Chavers, 86, of Grants Pass, was killed in the accident after his vehicle was struck by a following car at about 10:30 a.m. near Milepost 66.
The OSP investigation revealed that a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by Yessica MacLovio Rodriguez, 23, of Ferndale, Wash., was traveling south on I-5 in the fast lane when it drifted into the slow lane where it struck Chavers' 2002 Ford Explorer. Chavers lost control and the Ford struck a guardrail on the outside shoulder and flipped over it. The vehicle rolled down an approximate 60-foot embankment before striking a tree. Chavers was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision, the Toyota was struck by a southbound 2007 International truck pulling double trailers. No occupants of the Toyota or truck were injured. The driver of the truck was Neil K. Perkins, 55, of Roseburg.
The OSP said fatigued driving was being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash. The slow lane of Interstate 5 was closed for several hours while the investigation was being conducted. OSP was assisted by Oregon Department of Transportation and Rural Fire Metro.
