Teddy Roosevelt reprisor to help rebuild mill
A reprisor who has performed in the White House will take the stage in Medford at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in a fundraiser for efforts to rebuild Eagle Point's Butte Creek Mill.
Teddy Roosevelt’s Oregon Roadshow, a one-man show featuring historical recreator Joe Wiegand, will be staged in the Smullin Health Education Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, on the campus of Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. In addition to the fundraiser for the mill project, the performance comes amid a weeklong tour of schools and museums sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society and Wells Fargo.
Money raised in the Oct. 12 event will go to the Butte Creek Mill Foundation, which is working to rebuild the historical grist mill, which was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 2015. Cost is $25 and tickets may be purchased at buttecreekmill.com.
Built in 1872, the water-powered Butte Creek Mill, which was on the National Register of Historic Places, was the only grist mill in Oregon still grinding flour. An electrical short is believed to have started the blaze.
Wiegand is regarded as the premier Theodore Roosevelt reprisor. A political science graduate of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, he was a Harry S. Truman Scholar and Thomas Watson Fellow in his college days. After a 25-year career in politics and public policy, he began to tour the country as Theodore Roosevelt.
In 2008, to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt’s 150th birthday, Wiegand and his family toured the 50 states, culminating with a performance in the East Room of the White House for President George W. Bush and the president's family and staff members.
Wiegand was also featured as Roosevelt in “The Men Who Built America” on the History Channel and served as the model for the newest Roosevelt sculpture at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He had a feature role in “National Parks Adventure,” a film about national parks showing in IMAX theaters in 2016.
