Dive team recovers man’s body from Rogue River

A man’s death is under investigation after local authorities recovered a body from the Rogue River between Gold Hill and the city of Rogue River.

A dive team in a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol jet boat was needed to aid riverside Jackson County Search and Rescue volunteers on Foots Creek Road Thursday afternoon. Information as to the man’s identity or how he died is under investigation, according to a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office press release.

A citizen called dispatchers after spotting the body floating in the river near Valley of the Rogue State Park near Foots Creek and Birdseye Creek just before noon, according to the release. By 2:30 p.m., in an area thick with blackberry bushes along Foots Creek Road, the dive team aided Search and Rescue in getting the body onto the sheriff’s office jet boat.

Rogue River Fire District No. 1 was first to the scene early Thursday afternoon, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Julie Denney.

The dive team arrived just before 2 p.m. near the Coyote Evans landing in Rogue River, and reached the body by jet boat at about 2:15 p.m.

The man’s body has since been transported to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, where investigators will determine the cause and manner of the man’s death, as well as confirm his identity, according to the Sheriff’s Office. More information is anticipated after the man’s next-of-kin can be notified.
