Ashland Calendar: March 16

Friday, March 16

Breakfast: The Rogue Valley New Day Network Breakfast will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St. Ashland. The breakfast speaker will be Chris Chambers, Division Chief- Forestry at Ashland Fire and Rescue. He will speak about the coming fire season, what the city is doing to prepare and how everyone can do their part to reduce fire hazazrds. The RV New Day Network promotes peace, justice and sustainability in the Rogue Valley. This is a no-waste event, so participants are asked to bring their own utensils, plate, napkin, cup and food to share.

Dinner: Enjoy a traditional Irish meal prepared by Maren Faye Catering from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the Ashland First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland. The meal will consist of Irish lamb stew, carrot cake an a choice of beverage. Vegan options will be available. Sing along to lively Irish folk music performed provided by Molly Kissick and bid at the silent auction. Admission is $20 and $10 for youths 12 and younger at the door. Proceeds benefit Peace House’s Uncle Food’s Diner, a community feeding program for the needy.

Ashland International Folk Dancers: The group meets Fridays at the Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way, to perform dances from Eastern and Western Europe, Greece, Scandinavia, Israel, Turkey and the Middle East. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m., and dancing goes from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. No partners needed. Admission is $5. Call 541-535-6397 or 541-482-8249.

Southern Oregon Swing: Swing dances are held from 8 to 11 p.m. every third Friday at The Grove, 1195 E. Main St., Ashland. Beginners’ instruction is at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10, $5 for ages 66 and older, and free for ages 18 and younger and full-time students. Call 541-324-7981.

Max Gomez: Folk artist Max Gomez delivers his songs with an “easy twang that arrives at the halfway point between the tender folk balladry of Kris Kristofferson and the pop melodicism of Coldplay’s Chris Martin,” according to Rolling Stone magazine. Gomez, along with singer and songwriter Caitlin Jemma, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Headwaters, 84 Fourth St., Ashland. Rogue Modern Quilters Guild: The quilting group meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. the third Saturday of each month for sewing, demonstrations and show-and-tell projects at Talent Town Hall, 206 E. Low-cost Pet Vaccines: Bring your cat or dog to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, 5595 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17 to get them vaccinated. Festival Noons: The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will host a preface talk, offering an interactive in-depth introduction to “Othello,” at noon Saturday, March 17, at Carpenter Hall on the OSF campus, 44 S. St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser: Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with live music, a raffle drawing, traditional Irish food and drink from 9 a.m. to closing Saturday, March 17, at O’Ryans Irish Pub, 137 E. Main St., Ashland. Live music will be performed from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. including the bands AlphaLux, Brother and The Bouray. Admission is $10 and includes an Irish treat and a raffle entry.
