Smalley, Austin drive North past Sheldon

Pitcher and catcher combinations usually are the backbone of your defense but North Medford got a much-needed offensive jolt from its battery in Southwest Conference softball Monday.

Directly after Sheldon tied the opening game of a SWC doubleheader, Black Tornado senior pitcher Rylan Austin and junior catcher Chelby Smalley came up big in the sixth inning to help deliver a 3-2 triumph over the previously unbeaten Irish.

In Game 2, Smalley remained cool under pressure and provided a walk-off RBI double to net a 4-3 victory.

With the scored tied 2-all in the opener, Austin led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Smalley followed with a run-scoring triple to provide the difference for North Medford (7-2, 2-0 SWC). Smalley finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Austin allowed five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts inside the circle.

In the nightcap, North trailed 3-1 until Smalley closed the gap with an RBI single in the sixth and, after an Alex Barry single tied the game in the seventh, Smalley came up clutch again with her double to close the game, again finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Also in Game 2, Austin was 3-for-3 at the plate and allowed four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Kelsi Sorensen combined to go 4-for-6 with two runs and one RBI to pace Sheldon (9-2, 1-2).
