Passenger killed in early-morning crash

A Shady Cove woman was killed and two others were injured Saturday morning when the Honda Accord they were riding in crashed into the back of a parked semi-truck.

Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a 911 call at 2:29 a.m. of a crash on Highway 62 just south of Brophy Way, according to a JCSO news release.

Investigators said the 25-year-old woman was not using her seat belt and was partially ejected from the front passenger, according to the release.

The driver, Cody Dylan Lowe, of Shady Cove, suffered a possible broken arm and other minor injuries, the releases says. Lowe, 24, was wearing his seat belt and was taken to Rogue Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Twenty-five-year-old Tyler Robert Van Houton, of Shady Cove, was riding in the back seat without his seat belt on, according to the release, and was also taken to Rogue Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

"JCSO detectives, a medical examiner investigator, and members of the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team responded," the release says. "At the time of the crash, the roadway was not affected by ice or other weather-related conditions. Deputies are investigating whether impairment contributed to the crash."

The woman's identity will be released after her family and friends are notified.
