A $40,000 surprise

Dylan Schillinger's band classmates at North Medford know how to play one song that he doesn't.

When Schillinger left class, called to what he thought was a meeting Friday, the rest of the band rehearsed the Oregon State University fight song. They needed to have it polished in less than an hour for a ceremony for Schillinger, during which he was presented a Presidential scholarship from OSU.

More than 800 students applied for the scholarship, which totals $40,000 spread out across four years. Amanda Hutchinson, an admissions advisor, said that 87 winners were chosen.

Danielle Craig, spokeswoman for the Medford School District, said that four students were chosen as winners, including Emily McAllister from South Medford High School.

Amanda Hutchinson, admissions advisor with Oregon State University, presented North Medford senior Dylan Schillinger with a Presidential scholarship Friday morning.
