Quarry death under investigation

A young adult drowned a week shy of his 19th birthday in a remote swimming area near Ashland.

Steven Roy Reynolds, 18, of North Bend, died Monday afternoon while swimming at Keno Rock Quarry south of Dead Indian Memorial Road, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Jackson County Medical Examiners office determined that the death was accidental, caused by “freshwater drowning,” according to the release.

Witnesses told police that Reynolds went underwater Monday afternoon and failed to surface. Bystanders called 911 at 4:10 p.m. after finding him unresponsive in the water, pulling him out and attempting to resuscitate him.

First responders including Greensprings Fire, Mercy Flights and Jackson County sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and continued CPR, but Reynolds ultimately died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office made a chaplain available for individuals involved in responding to the emergency, according to the release.
