Sodomy, murder charges added in toddler's death
A man originally accused of manslaughter in the death of an Eagle Point toddler now faces additional charges of murder and first-degree sodomy.
Russel Brian Darrell Larsen, 25, was originally charged with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment following the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter Aug. 5.
An indictment this week added murder and first-degree sodomy to those charges.
The indictment accuses Larsen of murder for causing the death of the toddler while committing or attempting to commit sodomy.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Larsen Aug. 15. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $207,500 bail.
His bail has since been increased to $1 million, according to jail records.
An autopsy by the deputy state medical examiner determined the girl’s death was a homicide, with cause of death determined as blunt force trauma.
The first-degree assault charge against Larsen alleges he caused serious physical injury to the girl in an act that was separate from the act that caused her death.
Larsen, detectives learned, had been babysitting the toddler Aug. 5, shortly after moving into her mother’s home in the 200 block of South Shasta Avenue in Eagle Point. His address is officially listed in court records as being in the 6600 block of Oakhurst Street, Central Point.
At 3:24 p.m. Aug. 5, Eagle Point police responded to a 911 call from the girl’s mother, the release said.
Dispatchers stayed on the phone giving CPR instructions until personnel from Jackson County Fire District No. 3 arrived to take over life-saving efforts. A Mercy Flights ambulance transported the girl to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, where she died that evening.
Larsen faces the first-degree criminal mistreatment charge for allegedly withholding necessary and adequate medical care from the girl Aug. 5.
