Standoff ends with flooded apartment

A 39-year-old Grants Pass woman who flooded an apartment complex, threatened neighbors with her pit bull and had an eight-hour police standoff is behind bars on multiple charges, according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

Jennifer Richardson was arrested Saturday on suspicion of felony criminal mischief, criminal mischief in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, assault on a peace officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received multiple calls after 12 p.m., Saturday, of a neighbor purposely flooding her two-story apartment in the 1100 block of Fruitdale Drive. The apartments on either side had water coming through the walls and floor, according to police.

Officers had been on the lookout for Richardson a few days earlier after a report of criminal mischief to a neighbor’s vehicle as well as threatening people and police with her pitbull.

When emergency service crews arrived at the apartment, they were able to shut off water and power supplies.

Officers peeked through a window and saw water pouring through a large hole in the first floor ceiling.

Neighbors vacated the building as emergency crews feared the water could undermine the structural integrity of the building.

Grants Pass police say Richardson refused to leave the apartment and threw knives and other objects at officers during the eight-hour standoff.

A search warrant was obtained to enter the building, but Richardson refused to surrender, so officers pushed the front door open, which was blocked by a barricade of furniture, according to police.

Richardson was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and later lodged at the Josephine County Jail, officers said. The pitbull was captured and taken to an animal control facility.

According to police, there is extensive damage to Richardson’s apartment and the adjoining apartments.
