Man who accidentally shot self in neck arrested for violating probation
A man who was being treated at a hospital for reportedly shooting himself in the neck by accident in the Rogue Valley Mall parking lot Sunday afternoon is now in the Jackson County Jail for violating his probation and several other charges.
Nelson Loretto, 20, remains in the Jackson County Jail with no bail. He is held on the probation violation, which stems from a previous third-degree rape conviction, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, failure to report as a sex offender and unlawful possession of heroin, jail records show.
Police responded to the mall at 4:28 p.m. Sunday, then later tracked Loretto to a local emergency room, where he was being treated for a non life-threatening gunshot injury in his neck. An investigation showed he had been handling the weapon, a .38 revolver, when it went off. An acquaintance who was there drove Loretto to the emergency room.
"He was in the car fiddling with it, and he believed it was unloaded, apparently" said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. "But obviously it was not."
Loretto was lodged in the jail Monday after concluding his treatment.
