Children injured in school bus crash
A driver was cited and a half-dozen elementary school students were treated for injuries after a car hit a school bus Thursday morning along Redwood Highway in Grants Pass.
At about 9 a.m., a 2007 Hyundai Sonata sedan rear-ended a school bus at about 35 mph near the intersection of Allen Creek Road and Highway 199, according to a press release issued by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
Of the 35 Cave Junction students who were on board the bus for a field trip, six complained of pain from the crash and were taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. Some of the children were taken to the hospital by ambulance and others by private vehicle.
Police cited Cary Hungerford, 31, of Los Angeles, for following too closely, according to police. Hungerford had been following the bus while traveling northbound on Highway 199 and struck the bus when it stopped at a traffic light.
The crash left one lane of Redwood Highway closed for about 25 minutes while crews worked to tow away the Hyundai. The bus was able to drive away from the scene.
