Ashland senior meals programs to continue

The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission has canceled several events to try to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus within the community, but some essential services, such as food services for hungry seniors, will continue.

All nonessential activities for seniors were canceled based on Gov. Kate Brown’s guidance issued Thursday that no more than 10 vulnerable people should be gathered together.

Senior Services Superintendent Isleen Glatt said the senior center will continue to provide essential services such as meal deliveries.

At the senior center’s recommendation, Rogue Valley Council of Governments volunteers will continue to stage meals for its home delivery service, and those who attend the weekday Food & Friends lunches will be given a specific day and time for when to pick up five frozen meals to take home for the week.

“The focus is on lowering the spread and protecting our most vulnerable Ashland citizens,” Glatt said.

Staff will remain at the senior center to answer phones, answer questions and make referrals for seniors.

“We made the painful decision to stop activities to be a part of what our entire country is trying to do, which is slow the spread and practice social distancing,” Glatt said.

The AARP tax-aide program offered at The Grove has been canceled. Call 1-888-227-7669 for information on other tax-aide options in Southern Oregon.

Due to restrictions on public gatherings of 250 or more people for the next four weeks, the 30th annual Rogue Valley Bike Swap, scheduled for Saturday, April 4, will be rescheduled for a later date.

Details on the new date will be posted at RVTD.org/bikeswap and AshlandParksandRec.org.

All nonessential public meetings will be canceled during the next four weeks, according to an Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission press release.

For all APRC events not canceled, attendees are asked to stay six feet away from others, do not attend if sick, and avoid shaking hands.
