Fire near Eagle Point grows to 600 acres
The Worthington fire about five miles northeast of Eagle Point grew to about 600 acres overnight, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported early Friday morning.
The fire was reported at 3:13 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Worthington Road.
By 4:30 p.m., the wildfire had grown to more than 50 acres, by 6:15 p.m. the fire had grown to more than 150 acres, according to ODF Spokesman Brian Ballou.
By 7:15 p.m. the fire was still growing, and Level 3 “go” evacuations were ordered for the 1500 to 3200 blocks of Worthington Road. By 8 p.m. the fire had grown to 500 acres. Windy conditions in the evening fanned the growth of the fire.
Firefighters, helicopters and air tankers have been attacking the fire, which is burning through timber and brush.
The weather forecast calls for temperatures above 100 degrees Friday, with widespread haze in the morning, followed by patchy smoke in the afternoon.
