Case pending for woman charged in youth hockey embezzlement

Last fall you folks ran an article about a woman charged with manipulating funds from a youth hockey league. I was wondering, is there any follow-up? The kids in the hockey program deserve answers.

We haven’t forgotten about the case of Cara Jane Ruettgers, 44, of Medford, who faces felony charges in Jackson County Circuit Court for allegedly embezzling about $57,000 from the Rogue Valley Youth Hockey Association between February 2017 and October 2018, but we haven’t much in the way of new developments.

For those just tuning in, Medford police arrested Ruettgers in November for aggravated first-degree theft, first-degree forgery and identity theft following a monthslong investigation that involved resources from Medford police and the Oregon Department of Justice, according to earlier news reports.

According to documents filed by Ruettgers’ lawyer Jeni Feinberg private investigators are sifting through the hundreds of pages of evidence conducted in the case for their own evaluation.

“Once that evaluation is completed, counsel is confident that this matter will be settled without ever scheduling a trial,” Feinberg wrote July 14.

Ruettgers’ case is still pending, with her next hearing a pretrial conference scheduled for Aug. 28.

Ruettgers has no prior criminal history, Jackson County Circuit Court records show.
