IP 57 mailer is legitimate

I got something in the mail from “People Not Politicians” asking me to sign Initiative Petition 57. Is this legitimate?

— Bob D.

Bob, there is a legitimate petition circulating to get IP 57 on the November 2020 ballot.

The petition would amend the Oregon Constitution to create an independent redistricting commission. The Legislature currently draws district boundaries.

Oregon has the possibility of getting a sixth Congressional District once the census is concluded because of its growing population.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of drama surrounding the creation of a Congressional district because it can affect representation in Congress.

Accusations of gerrymandering are common when new districts are formed, and other states have run into legal hot water by creating some unusual districts.

Under IP 57, a 12-member commission, instead of the Legislature, would be charged with creating new districts.

Organizers of People Not Politicians have been sending out mass mailers urging voters to download single-signature petitions because the pandemic has made it difficult to gather signatures in more traditional ways.

They have until Aug. 17 to collect 58,789 signatures to qualify for the November ballot.
