I-5 reopens; Hwy 99 still closed from Almeda fire

Both north and southbound lanes of I-5 have reopened as crews continue to battle the Almeda fire in the Rogue Valley, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced Tuesday at 10:18 p.m.

ODOT urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the area.

Exit 24 in Phoenix and Exit 21 in Talent remain closed.The Almeda fire has burned on both sides of I-5.

Oregon Highway 99 remains closed between Garfield Street in south Medford to South Valley View Road just north of Ashland due to ongoing fire activity.

The Almeda fire was reported Tuesday morning near Almeda Drive in Ashland, then burned through parts of Talent and Phoenix toward Medford, spotting at least as far as Central Point by 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire was estimated at 1,500 acres before night fell on Tuesday.

By 11 p.m., the Oregon Department of Forestry estimated the Almeda fire had grown to 2,500 to 3,000 acres.
