COVID-19 outbreak linked to McDonald's in south Medford

The Oregon Health Authority reported a COVID-19 workplace outbreak of 21 cases tied to a McDonald’s fast food restaurant in south Medford.

The McDonald’s is near the intersection of Barnett Road and Highway 99.

Workplace case counts include everyone linked to outbreaks, including employees and their household members, OHA said.

OHA disclosed the outbreak on Wednesday. The state agency said an investigation began back on Sept. 6, but the initial case count was below the threshold for public disclosure.

To protect people’s privacy, OHA said it only discloses outbreaks involving five or more COVID-19 cases at workplaces with at least 30 workers.

“State and county public health officials are working with the business to address the outbreak and protect the health of workers,” OHA said.

The report of the McDonald’s outbreak comes after Jackson County reported on Friday a workplace outbreak involving four household contacts and six employees of the Veterans Affairs Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in White City.

On Wednesday, Jackson County Public Health officials reported 21 new COVID-19 cases in the county, bringing the county’s total to 1,295 with six deaths.

Statewide, Oregon reported 305 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases and two new deaths.

An 86-year-old man in Washington County and a 69-year-old woman in Deschutes County were the latest COVID-19 victims. They both had underlying conditions, the Oregon Health Authority said.

The state has had 35,634 total reported cases and 583 deaths.

Other new workplace outbreaks in the state have hit the Oregon State Hospital, which treats mentally ill people. OHA said Wednesday that 20 cases are tied to the hospital in Salem.

The Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem is facing an outbreak involving 41 people, OHA said.

Another 20 cases are linked to a workplace outbreak at New Season Foods Company in Washington County, OHA said.
