Body found in home during fire response near Phoenix Thursday
Jackson County Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating a woman’s death following a Thursday night house fire just outside Phoenix, police and fire officials reported.
Four engines from Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 responded to the fire, at 4059 Fern Valley Road, at 6:40 p.m. Crews arrived about six minutes later to find a “well-involved” two-story home, according to Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Erin Sawall.
“People had been banging on the door, were unable to get anybody out of the house at that time, so we didn’t know if there were occupants in,” Sawall said.
Crews had the main part of the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes, and when personnel entered the home, they found the woman dead inside.
The woman’s identity was not immediately released pending notification of family members. Crews stayed on scene for several more hours, working to overhaul the fire and coordinate with the sheriff’s department, Sawall said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, as is the cause of the woman’s death.
