Legislators want to hear Southern Oregonians post-fire experiences

The Oregon Legislature will be holding a virtual public hearing to learn about Southern Oregonians post-fire experiences and needs related to housing, basic needs, cleanup and rebuilding.

The public hearing is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“So many have experienced the devastating impacts of last year’s fires, and you know more than anyone about what you need to recover and reestablish your homes, livelihoods and communities. I urge you to deliver either verbal testimony live/virtually during the meeting, or to submit written testimony,” Rep. Pam Marsh, D-Ashland, said in an email newsletter about the upcoming public hearing.

The Almeda and South Obenchain fires wiped out thousands of homes and destroyed about 170 business buildings in Jackson County in September 2020.

People can testify remotely via video or phone, or send written testimony.

To register to speak via video, visit survey.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dopIQ6y2k7Tz6XI.

The system will send you an email with a registration meeting link and instructions on how to delivery your testimony.

To register by phone, call 833-588-4500. The phone system will provide you with a phone number and access code to call into the meeting and speak.

People wishing to speak must register before the start of the meeting. Because of time constraints, registering doesn’t guarantee you will be given an opportunity to speak. Written testimony is encouraged even if you plan to speak.

Written testimony can be emailed to hwrec.exhibits@oregonlegislature.gov. Your submission will be posted on the Oregon Legislative Information System website where it can be viewed by legislators and the public. Written testimony must be received by 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The public hearing can be viewed live online, or through a recording after the meeting ends.

To watch the live stream, go to olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2021R1/Committees/HWREC/Overview.

Look for the meeting date in the top right under “Meetings.” While the meeting is live, there will be a camera icon next to the meeting date, 2/17/2021, and after the meeting there will be an arrow icon next to the date. Click these icons during or after the meeting to watch the hearing.
