Movies under the stars

Jamie Lusch / Mail Tribune Movies in the Park will return to Medford's Bear Creek Park, shown here, and Central Point parks.
A sign of normalcy returns this summer with movies in the park

Movie buffs eager for their summer cinema fix are in for a treat with two Rogue Valley cities bringing their A game — and even their ballgame locale — to summer movie season.

Movies in the Park for the city of Central Point kicked off early this spring, while the city of Medford plans to start in July.

Nikki Petersen, Central Point special events coordinator, said residents and city officials were champing at the bit to keep summer fun at full tilt this year. The city scheduled a trio of drive-in movies at the Central Point Little League fields, which will hopefully see some needed renovation, with admission to all three drive-in style movies — one remains in August — benefitting the languishing fields.

Five Movies in the Park offerings will appeal to moviegoers who prefer lying under the stars on a blanket with the fam.

“We are running our summer like nothing has changed. We are literally trying to do every single event we did in 2019, before the pandemic,” Petersen said.

“We will rotate our park movies with one at Pfaff Park, one at Twin Creeks and two at Don Jones. For the one in October, we’ll be showing Disney’s new 'Cruella' for the weekend before Halloween at Twin Creeks, in conjunction with the Liam’s Trunk or Treat. We are really, really excited, and October can’t come soon enough.”

Movies in the Park in Medford, if pandemic restrictions don’t change, will be hosted at the Bear Creek Park outdoor amphitheater off Highland Drive, beginning July 9 with “Spies in Disguise.”

Parks officials said the only change from pre-pandemic summer movies would be that sections would be marked to provide space for movie-goers to safely distance.
