Man shot at carnival in Rogue Valley Mall parking lot

Police investigating the shooting, which appears to have occurred when a physical fight escalated Saturday night

Medford police detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred late Saturday in a parking lot at the Rogue Valley Mall.

At least one person was shot several times after a physical fight among rival groups of mostly youths escalated into a life-threatening incident, according to Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau.

“The scene was very chaotic, as it was a crowded event when the shooting occurred,” Budreau said Sunday afternoon in a written statement. “Multiple people fled the scene prior to police arrival.”

Police were called to the mall at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday on the report of shots fired at a crowded outdoor carnival going on there. Vehicles were seen leaving the mall as officers arrived, he said.

Officers discovered “multiple spent shell casings in the parking lot east of Bed Bath & Beyond,” found no victims requiring medical attention and began taking statements from witnesses.

A man with multiple gunshot wounds was dropped off at a local hospital a short time later, Budreau said.

“The good news is that he is expected to survive,” he stressed.

Investigation of this crime is ongoing and police are asking the public for information that could help them further piece together what happened. Call (541) 770-4783 at any time, Budreau added.
