Containment lines hold on Wards Creek Fire
Containment lines were holding on the 17-acre Wards Creek Fire east of the town of Rogue River, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported Thursday night.
The fire was 40% mopped up as of Thursday night, reaching 50 feet in and around the perimeter. The goal for overnight firefighters was continuing mop-up operations and strengthening perimeter lines, ODF said.
The lightning-sparked fire in the hills above the 3100 block of Wards Creek Road was reported Tuesday night as a single tree on fire that was spreading to the surrounding area.
Firefighters have faced extremely steep terrain with dense brush, limited road access and hot daytime temperatures. Despite many homes in the area, evacuations haven’t been necessary, ODF said.
Due to steady progress on the fire, ODF doesn’t plan further updates unless conditions change. Mop-up operations will continue and smoke may still be visible.
