ODF hosts live burn training

The Oregon Department of Forestry is hosting a Live Burn training for eight new firefighters Thursday and Friday in Central Point.

With an above average start to the fire season and several days of lightning, many of the new firefighters have already been deployed into the field, said ODF spokeswoman Natalie Weber..

“They likely have been out on fires this past week, however this is just an opportunity for them to try out the techniques they have been learning in a very controlled environment,” Weber said.

This event allows new fire crews to practice in a safe space where they don’t have to worry about external pressures such as a home or business catching fire, she said.

Southern Oregon sees about a third of the state’s fires, which means events like this are crucial for crews to ensure their staff are properly trained and prepared , Weber said.

Over the course of the two days firefighters will participate in a variety of training exercises such as the pump and roll tactic and communicating over the radio with dispatch.

A total of 24 acres of grassland will be burned during the training.

If you see smoke near Central Point, it is more than likely the fire training, Weber said.

“We understand that there may be some concerns about actually putting fire on the landscape right now, but rest assured we have 50 experienced firefighters out here,” she said.
