Today is a grim news day.

American troops have been targeted and killed in Afghanistan. As we write this, unknown numbers of our troops, possibly American civilians, certainly foreigners, and Afghanis are all casualties of a suicide bomber at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan.  First reports say children are among those murdered. Our only observation is that when someone is willing to die, they can turn themselves into a dangerous weapon that's difficult to defend against.  More needs to be known, as Larry Mendte points out in this Commentary.  In the days/weeks to come, we'll provide that perspective.  Just not in a rush to judgment today.

In the late '50s, Pete Seeger had an idea for a folk song.

For lyrics, he'd use Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8.

Few things have been written more simple or powerful than that portion of the Bible.  It works.  And it works for anyone, not ONLY people of faith or of Judeo-Christian heritage.

The Byrds covered it with an electric folk sound in 1965, and it became an international hit.

Maybe you don't quote the Bible chapter and verse.  But you do know the words, and you've heard the lyrics.  And without spoiling Larry Mendte's Commentary today, see if his thoughts don't remind you of this verse that became a pop tune.
