Perhaps especially over these holidays, we all want to imagine a world -- a country -- that is more civil.  But when it comes to politics, people can be downright nasty and that's something -- "nasty" -- that keeps getting redefined as decades go on.

Hearst and Pulitzer, revered names in journalism, were hardly fawning innocent types.  They attacked candidates they didn't want in office unmercifully.

It's no different today.
