Cascade Christian Cruises To Victory Over Phoenix
On Friday night, the Cascade Christian Challengers hosted the Phoenix Pirates at U.S. Cellular Field in Medford to open the football season.
The Pirates' opening drive was stalled with a punt, and the Challengers were quick to work on the team's first offensive possession of the season.
Senior quarterback Kiegan Schaan threw a screen pass to senior wideout Cade Sample, and he took it 71 yards for a touchdown.
One play. One score.
The Challengers added an insurance score on the next drive when Schaan ran it in from five yards to make it a 14-0 lead.
The Pirates responded quickly though. On the ensuing kickoff, Phoenix kick returner Nick Goff countered with a 94-yard touchdown return, but Phoenix missed the extra point to make it 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, Cascade Christian would take control of the game and run away with it.
The Challengers scored four times to go into the half with a 42-6 lead.
Junior punt returner Kristian Fralich returned two punts for a touchdown in the second quarter, and an interception by him on defense set up a short touchdown run by Elijah Smith as well.
Kiegan Schaan rounded out the first-half scoring for the Challengers with a 48-yard touchdown run.
Cascade Christian kept control of the game through the second half and went on to win 52-13.
Last year's Class 3A state runner-up Cascade Christian started the season with a decisive win and travels to Klamath Union next Friday.
The Class 4A Phoenix Pirates will look to bounce back from their opening loss, hosting Newport next week on Sept. 13
