This Day In Music: December 22nd

On this Day In Music in 1979 Rupert Holmes started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Escape, (The Pina Colada Song)”, his only US hit. In 2002 Joe Strummer, lead singer of the Clash, died of heart failure at the age of 50. In 2010 The British government declared the Beatles' famous Abbey Road zebra-crossing a national heritage site. And in 2014, Joe Cocker, the singer famous for "You Are So Beautiful", "Up Where We Belong” and "With A Little Help From My Friends", died at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer. Cocker’s career in music spanned more than 5 decades, singing in a series of bands early in his career before finding mainstream success as a solo act. His stardom peaked with the song “Up Where We Belong” from the soundtrack to An Officer and a Gentleman. The duet with Jennifer Warnes was an international hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and winning a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list in 2008.Just some of the notes about December 22nd, This Day in Music.
