First Friday

The Ashland Gallery Association's First Friday art walk takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 6. New exhibits, artists' receptions and art demonstrations will be featured among more than 30 participating galleries in downtown Ashland.

One of the highlights of the event includes the unveiling of the 2007 "A Taste of Ashland" poster at David Bjurstrom's studio and gallery. See the listing below.

The gallery features Southwestern and Pacific Northwest Indian art and crafts. Mata Ortiz pottery from Casas Grandes, Mexico, will be available.

ART AND SOUL GALLERY: 247 E. Main St., artandsoulgallery.com, 488-9006.

The gallery features original art by state and nationally recognized artists. "Layers," a series of water media abstracts by Lynda Hoffman-Snodgrass, will be presented. A reception for the artist will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

ASHLAND ART WORKS: 291 Oak St., ashlandartworks.com, 488-4735.

Featuring contemporary art and crafts with four galleries and artists' studios on Ashland Creek. Sculptures and assemblages by Frederick Hazard will be available, along with wine-tasting from Eagle Mill Winery and music by the Ashland Middle School Marimba Band.

ASHLAND ARTISAN GALLERY: 163 E. Main St., 488-5698.

Featuring paintings by Denise Baxter, along with a variety of artwork by local artists. A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

Showcasing fine woodwork from around the world.

The gallery and gift shop showcases artwork from 70 studios. Glass art by Justin Lundberg will be featured.

Featuring Bjurstrom's original graphite pencil drawings and limited edition prints. Bjurstrom's fine art print selected for the annual A Taste of Ashland celebration will be unveiled.

"Gatherings," collage by San Francisco artist Randall Jay will be presented.

Glass, sculpture and two-dimensional art by local and national artists are featured at the gallery. April's exhibits include "The Big Picture," paintings in various media by Deanne Belinoff of Portland, and "Migrations," ceramic installation by Sana Krusoe of Eugene. A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

"Blank Slate," whole-cloth all-white American quilts, will be displayed.

Pottery by Frank Philipps and "Everyday Things," photography by Jerrod Philipps and Drew Force, will be presented.

Landscapes and nudes in acrylics and oils by Silvia Trujillo will be presented. A reception for the artist, along with an art demonstration and live music, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

"Into the Garden," a collection of etchings, artist's books and paintings by seven artists, will be available. There will be art demonstrations and opportunities to meet the artists.

Featuring abstract and figurative works in oil on canvas by Sam Gimbel. Gimbel will be available to discuss his work.

Scott Carlson and Keith Gabor will demonstrate glassblowing techniques all day Friday.

"Gallagher meets Screeching Bird," sculptures by Tim Gallagher and whimsical paintings by Anne Schreivogl, will be presented. The artists will be on hand to discuss their work.

HOUSTON'S CUSTOM FRAMING AND FINE ART: 270 E. Main St., houstoncustomframing.com, 482-1983.

Work by gallery artists Yuji Hiratsuka, Russell Chatham, Mayumi Oda and Stephen McMillan will be displayed. Acoustic guitarist David Rogers will perform from 5 to 8 p.m.

Featuring custom tile, mosaic, photography, woodwork, sculpture and hand-blown glass. "Dancing Clay," ceramic tile assemblages by Shoshanah Dubiner, will be presented. The artist will be on hand to discuss her work.

JEGA GALLERY AND SCULPTURE GARDEN: 625 A St., 488-2474.

The working sculpture studio of J. Ellen Austin and visiting artists. The gallery's current exhibit, "Women with Attitude and Men Who Love Women with Attitude," will be presented through April.

Featuring works in various media by gallery artists. "Mortal Moments," new works in oil by Katherine Taylor, will be presented. Taylor will be available to discuss her work.
