A riverside gallery

In just seven years, the annual Shady Cove River art walk has grown from 35 participating artists to more than 100, drawing nearly 5,000 visitors to the small community.

"We're a resort community noted for our fishing and rafting, but we're starting to be noticed for our art as well," says coordinator Alma Spicer.

Regional artists, artisans and performing artists will assemble this weekend for the free event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14. The art walk will be held at Edgewater Inn, 7800 Rogue River Drive, and Rogue River RV Park, 21800 Highway 62, Shady Cove. The two riverfront properties are connected by a path that runs beneath the Shady Cove Bridge. Artist booths will be located in the inn's conference room, breezeway, courtyard and in a tent outside, as well as along the riverbank.

This year's featured artist will be Shady Cove artist Scott Lang. A humble man, Lang took a little convincing to step into the spotlight, says Spicer.

"He's so good, and he needs to be recognized," she says.

Lang's acrylic and watercolor paintings evoke a sense of nostalgia. Artifacts of Americana, including old cars, trains, diners and other classic memorabilia, frequently appear in his detailed landscapes.

"I try to paint the sort of things I remember from being a kid, and how things appeared when times were nice right after the war," says Lang.

Other art-walk highlights include oil paintings by Shady Cove artist Billye Woodford, Old West art by Eagle Point artist Carl Seyboldt, wildlife paintings by Glendale artist Trudy Lee Estes, photographs of Italy and South America by Cave Junction artist Jim Lettis and architectural oil paintings by Eagle Point artist Charity Hubbard.

On a beautiful day with the scenic Rogue River nearby, "this makes for a beautiful art venue," says Spicer.

There also will be weaving, plein air painting, and fly-tying demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Several lunch options will be available, including Lisa Salvioli's Italian Kitchen, Jeffro's BBQ and the Rogue River Lodge, catering blackened salmon and barbecued oysters in the courtyard at the inn. Crater Lake Cellars will provide wine tastings. Also look for roasted nuts, shaved-ice treats and ice cream outside near the pavilion.

Free parking is available south of the Shady Cove bridge (at the former Two Pines Smokehouse). A free trolley will be on hand to pick up guests and take them to the art-walk entrance. "Fee parking" is available across from Edgewater Inn. (Please note parking will not be available at Edgewater Inn or Rogue River RV Park.)

The event is sponsored by the Shady Cove-Upper Rogue Chamber Visitors and Convention Bureau as well as Edgewater Inn and Rogue River RV Park.

'Medco' and other acrylic and watercolor paintings by Scott Lang will be featured at the 2011 Shady Cove River art walk. Lang highlights artifacts of Americana in many of his works.
